Briefly Noted: Meditation Isn’t One State of Mind
I’ve always had a sense that the type of meditation you practice matters. My own Tibetan Buddhist practice has felt very different from a good friend’s Zen practice, but I’ve never had a clear way to describe how those differences might show up in their effects.
A recent study offers one possible explanation. Different forms of meditation appear to tune the brain in different ways: some stabilizing attention, others increasing flexibility and responsiveness.
We’ve known for a while that meditation is good for you. This suggests something more specific: the type of meditation you practice may shape how your mind works.
